Swan Lake

En tiedä olenko maininnut, mutta maalla tonttimme molempia puolia reunustaa järvi. Suurempi järven selkä on yhteysessä tähän toisen puolen pienempään lahteen kapealla salmella, joka ikävä kyllä meinaa vuosi vuodelta kasvaa umpeen. Lahti on rauhallinen paikka ja muun muassa joutsenien
vakituinen pesimäpaikka. Olisi siis sääli, jos se hoitamattomuuden vuoksi rehevöityisi ja kuivuisi täysin.

I probably have not mentioned before that our country house is situated by two gulfs which are connected with narrow strait. Unfortunately, this strait is suffering from serious eutrophication. The gulf is a place where for example swans make their nest each year and enjoy its serenity. It would be such a shame should the strait and eventually the whole gulf loose its connection to the wider lake area and eutrophicate completely without streaming water.

Olemme pitäneet salmea omatoimisesti auki jokakesäisellä venelilyllä salmen läpi ja muutama vuosi sitten hankittiin myös lietepumppauslaite, joka asennettiin itsetehtyyn puulauttaan. Lietepumppu pumppaa pohjan lietteitä ja häiritsee  muuta kasvilluutta siten etteivät ne pääse kasvamaan veneilyväylälle. Tällä tavalla olemme saaneet pidettyä edes jonkin näköisen virtauksen isommasta vesistöstä pienempään lahteen. Välillä kuitenkin tuntuu, että salmi tarvitsisi isomman operaation, jolla sen saisi kerralla auki, mutta sellainen taitanee olla sitten jo jonkinlaisten lupien takana ekä välttämättä toteutettavissa kovin pienillä pelimerkeillä? Vai mitä arvelette?

We have kept the strait open by driving through it with our small motorboat every summer and a few years ago we even bought a small mud pump which was installed on a self-made raft. It pumps up the mud from the strait and simultaneously disturbs other water plants from attaching to the bottom of the strait as well. This way we have been able to maintain at least a some level of water stream from the wider water area to this smaller gulf. Sometimes however it feels that a bigger operation would be needed, but that probably would require some authorisation and plenty of pesetas too? Or what do you think?

Joka kevät kuitenkin sekä pumppu, että perämoottori on ensin huollettava. Vaihdoimme siis öljyt ja tänävuonna perämoottori pääsi myös paikalliseen huoltoon, jonka ansioista jäähdytysvesi virtaa jälleen ja moottori hyriseekin tasaiemmin kuin ennen. Ainoastaan vanha vene alkaa näyttää sen verran antiikkiselta, että olisi ehkä parempi vaihtaa se uudempaan ja vankempaan malliin. Suosituksia otetaan siis ilomielin vastaan :)

Each spring both the pump and the outboard motor has to go through a short maintenance check. Typically we change the oils ourselves but this year the motor got a visit to a professional maintenance engineer who fixed its cooling system. And by the sound of it it seems the motor probably lengthened its life expectancy by some years too. Only our old boat itself looks like its best-before-date has long gone and should perhaps be replaced by something more robust. All recommendations are therefore more than welcome :)
